Newcastle United demolished top-four rivals Tottenham Hotspur with a five-goal bombardment inside the first 21 minutes paving the way to a 6-1 victory inside a rocking St James Park.

Jacob Murphy took just two minutes to open the scoring after Hugo Lloris spilled a Joelinton shot, then four minutes later Joelinton rounded Lloris to add a second for Newcastle.

Murphy wasted no time rocketing in the third from range after nine minutes of play and the crowd inside of St James couldn’t believe what they were seeing as Alexsander Isak tucked away two more chances to make it 5-0.

Tottenham improved in the second half with Harry Kane scoring what proved to be a consolation goal four minutes into the second half, but, just after the hour mark Callum Wilson scored Newcastle’s sixth after coming off the bench.

It was an impressive response to last week’s disappointing 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa by Newcastle who have once again improved their chances of Champions League football returning to Tyneside.

Newcastle moved back into third place level on points with Manchester United and six points better off than fifth-place Tottenham who have played a game more and whose hopes of Champions League football next season fall further away.
