Hebburn Town brushed aside Newton Aycliffe in what was a comfortable 4-1 win in County Durham last night.

The Hornets had the game all done and dusted within the first half essentially, as they went into the break 4-0 up thanks to a Michael Richardson hat-trick and a third goal in two games for Cedwyn Scott.

Liam Jarvie did get one back for Aycliffe early in the second half, and Andrei-Vasile Ardelean missed a penalty on a night that just wasn’t to be for the fifth placed side.

Hebburn were in front within 15 minutes when Tom Potter lobbed the ball over the defence through to Richardson and he in turn lobbed the ball sweetly over the ‘keeper.

Just over 10 minutes later, the Hornets doubled their lead when Carl Taylor’s cross from the right was fumbled by goalkeeper Adam Pickford and Richardson was able to tap the ball in off a defender.

Then in the 36th minute, Hebburn extended their advantage when Darren Lough started a smart move in which he linked with Scott and his intelligent one-touch pass led to Richardson curling the ball round Pickford to get his third of the night.

Scott got a goal of his own eight minutes later – beating his man on the right and smashing the ball in the left-hand corner.

Newton Aycliffe made a bright start to the second half and got a goal back through Jarvie in the 49th minute, when he beat Lough to a long-ball before burying the ball past Hebburn ‘keeper Mark Foden into the bottom-left corner.

The hosts got a penalty in the 78th minute after visiting captain Louis Storey brought down Jarvie in the box but Ardelean’s powerless penalty was easily saved by Foden to the right.

Hebburn nearly added a fifth in the closing stages after a poorly defended corner led to Taylor’s shot going just wide of the mark.

Up next for the Hornets is Shildon at home on Saturday.
