Match report: Sunderland Men’s Table Tennis 1sts 7-10 York Men’s 2nds

Sunderland Men displayed a valiant effort against a strong York quartet. Unfortunately, York Men proved too strong for Sunderland Men’s this time.

The first game proved to be difficult for Sunderland with Samuel Murcia being on the receiving end of a tactical masterclass from York’s Joe Hirst. After multiple impressive rallies between the two, it was simply not meant to be for Murcia as Hirst was at the end of each and every attack that Murcia threw at him.

The next game saw Sunderland’s Jeffrey Osuchukwu go head-to-head with York’s Flynn Kendall. Despite Osuchukwu’s efforts and game plan Kendall saw through them and walked away with a 3-0 victory making the overall score 0-2 to York men’s.

Following this was Asu Bukunmi’s chance against York’s Kabeer Abdulhusein. The two had an eventful match, both having to work extra hard to try come out on top but Sunderland’s Bukunmi’s game plan proved to be the stronger one at the end of the day which meant a 3-1 victory for Sunderland making it the first victory.

Meanwhile, on the opposite table we saw Sunderland’s Johnson showcase the recent improvements he has been making through training against York’s Pak On Lam by holding his nerve in a close fought five set match.

The next few games went back and forth between the two teams as each player fought relentlessly. This brought us to the doubles which went in favour of York Men where they won 3-0. Which meant York Men’s left Wearside after a great battle with a 10-7 win.
