Newcastle Benfield 1-1 Kendal Town: Aidan Haley secures Benfield point to continue unbeaten run

Newcastle Benfield 1-1 Kendal Town

Newcastle Benfield rescued a point late on against play-off hopefuls Kendal Town to continue their new found form.

Steven Yawson opened the scoring for the visitors on the hour mark, but this didn’t deter Benfield as Aidan Haley equalised on the back of heavy Benfield pressure 80 minutes in.

Coming into the tie, fifth placed Kendal Town arrived to the MKM Stadium on the back of a 2-1 win against a strong North Shields side. Whereas, Benfield, came into this fixture on fine form, picking up a maximum nine points from the last three games.

The first twenty minutes of the game were an even affair with neither side really taking full control of the match. Benfield’s front three of Jakub Zych, Glen Hargreaves and Noah Millington continued to be a nuisance for the Kendal defence throughout the first half yet didn’t manage to break the deadlock.

Kendal however, grew into the game towards the end of the first 45, piling on the pressure making it difficult for The Lions to get out. Defensive heroics from Josh Morton kept the score level as he cleared the ball after the Kendal number 11, Yawson, rounded Thomas Shanlan in goal.

The start of the second half reflected how the majority of the first half went, a close affair with neither side able to get ahead.

This however changed on the hour mark, good play from Kendal Town down the left side found their winger at the byline, a fizzed grounded delivery across the goalmouth found the feet of Kendal’s attacker, Yawson, who poked home.

Benfield were not to be deterred by the opener. Lewis Orrell delivered a pinpoint cross in the last ten minutes which caused a scramble in Kendal’s penalty area, Haley managed to tap the ball home from four yards, getting the equaliser for Benfield, and a well-deserved point.

Up next for Andrew Ferguson’s Newcastle Benfield is an away trip to Guisborough Town this Saturday.
