Match Report: Manchester United Women 5-3 Newcastle United Women

Manchester United Women 5-3 Newcastle United Women

Newcastle United Women ended their League Cup campaign after losing away to WSL side Manchester United in an eight-goal thriller.

Manchester United took the lead twice in the first half after Newcastle conceded an own goal within the first 10 minutes, however the Magpies put up a strong fight and scored goals both sides of half-time, with Deanna Cooper and Amy Andrews drawing their team level on two occasions.

Man United managed to get themselves a three goal lead by the 90th minute, with Newcastle pulling one back in stoppage time, but their efforts were not enough to get themselves the win.

Manchester United saw themselves go in front after just nine minutes through an own goal after Hannah-Sophie Greenwood rolled the ball into her own net from a corner, but the Geordies managed to level through Cooper after a great run.

Both teams had intense periods of play until the Red Devils managed to take the lead again with a goal by Emma Watson. They then almost extended their lead further when Anna Sandberg’s deflected cross forced Newcastle’s keeper into a save, ending with the ball landing perfectly for Watson, but her shot went just wide.

In the 47th minute Newcastle drew level with a lovely goal from Andrews, and their first substitute was made which saw Lois Joel replaced by Emma Kelly.

Manchester United eventually took the lead for the third time when Rachel Williams put the ball into the net. Newcastle made another substitute in the 68th minute, followed by a triple change just six minutes later, but this didn’t stop the Red Devils from scoring a 4th through Gabby George, and another six minutes later through Elizabeth Terland who turned in Leah Galtons cross.

Newcastle pulled one back in added time through Joel, however it was just a consolation with the game ending in a 5-3 loss.
