Newcastle United are set to enter the fourth round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup after beating Middlesbrough 2-0 the in Tyne-Tees derby.
Hannah Greenwood scored her first goal for the Magpies just minutes before the whistle was blown for half time, giving them a one goal lead at the break. This was followed by another in the second half for Newcastle, with Greenwood getting her second of the game in the 84th minute.
Middlesbrough previously escaped being dropped out of the cup after a close match against Hull City Ladies, with the match having gone to penalties. For Newcastle, this was their first game since a tragic 6-1 loss to Liverpool in the Women’s League Cup.
Newcastle created the first opportunity of game in the 20th minute, with Amy Andrews flicking the ball over a Boro defender to give Jasmine McQuade a chance, but Laura Wareham was quick to intercept.
In the 41st minute, Magpies forward Beth Lumsden shot from near the corner and despite it being saved by Wareham, Greenwood managed to fire the rebound home to put Newcastle ahead.
In the second half, Newcastle showed a promising attack in the 57th minute as Demi Stokes dribbled down the line and an attempted passed to Lumsden hit the crossbar.
Six minutes before the full-time whistle, Greenwood scored for the home team again after her strike went in the bottom right corner of the goal, which secured the win for Newcastle.
Newcastle’s opponents in the next round of the FA Cup have not yet been confirmed, with the club awaiting to see who wins between Nottingham Forest and Burnley.
