Newcastle Benfield’s unbeaten run ends at the hands of Boro Rangers
Newcastle Benfield 0-2 Boro Rangers
The lions succumbed to a 2-0 defeat, their first loss since October as Boro Rangers collected their first league victory in six games.
Benfield came into this afternoon’s fixture full of confidence, with only one loss in eleven, the Lions couldn’t seem to be stopped. Boro Rangers were fresh of a Brooks Mileson League Cup victory against Sunderland RCA.
Boro Rangers broke the deadlock with a peach of an effort in the ninth minute via Steven Keenan and then went on to double their lead in the 24th minute through a Ben Turner back-heel.
A slow cagey start to the game for Benfield was an unfortunate sign for things to come as they struggled to get the ball down and play, Benfield’s lack of fluidity was punished by Boro as a wonder strike from their skipper Keenan took bobble on its way to beating Lennon Trinder in goal.
Boro Rangers did not slow down as they doubled their lead in the 24th minute, Turner of Boro saw his header cleared off the line by Ahmed Al-Shabeeb, however Turner reacted first, and his back-heeled rebound found the net.
Benfield failed to get any sort of momentum going in the second 45, rarely testing Boro’s keeper. A few opportunities came Benfield’s way, but the final pass just wasn’t there.
The lions will look to respond in strong fashion as they travel to Northallerton Town next Saturday.
