Hebburn Town rue missed chances as 3 points dropped in 6 goal thriller

Hebburn Town let three points slip in a six goal thriller featuring two penalties and a last-minute equaliser in South Tyneside.

Four goals came in the first half with both Hebburn goals coming from Ethan Brown, Leek Town’s goals came from Connor Heath and Alex Hurst.

After a slow start to the second half Oliver Martin came off the bench to put Hebburn back into the lead before Leek’s very own super sub Louis Potts’ injury time volley tied things up.

Hebburn were handed a chance to go ahead early when Jack Foalle won a penalty in the second minute, However Guy Martin failed to capitalise as he sliced his spot kick wide.

The first goal of the afternoon came via Ethan Wood who, after a forward ball from debutant Robert Briggs, sent a low drive past Dino Visser from range to give Hebburn Town the lead.

The Hornets however were unable to keep the momentum as just four minutes later, Leek’s Connor Heath headed home from close range after his initial strike was palmed back towards the number nine who followed up inside the box.

Hebburn reacted well, and after some nice play down the left, G. Martin squared a brilliant ball across the area to Jack Foalle, whose shot forced Visser into action with a fantastic save.

Just on half-time, Leek Town had a bright spell of play down the right-hand side before Heath was taken down inside the box by Jack Donaghy. After consulting his linesman the referee gave a penalty after initially calling for a free kick for simulation, Alex Hurst was able to convert sending the keeper the wrong way.

Right from kick-off Hebburn Town equalised after launched ball forward from Liam Murray fell to Ethan Wood who scored again from outside the box.

The second half started slow with both sides struggling to really carve out an opportunity, this was until G. Martin, with brilliant ball into the box, found Jack Foalle whose effort was well stopped by Visser once again.

Hebburn added more pressure after a ball into the box from Darcy Campbell was cleared, falling for Oliver Martin whose effort crashed off the ball to G. Martin whose effort was stopped by Visser.

In the 88th minute, O.Martin found himself in behind for Hebburn, as he slotted his shot past the goalkeeper to give the Hornets the lead going into the final few minutes.

Late on Potts refused to let his Leek side leave Hebburn with nothing, who saw the ball dropping down and he struck a sweet volley into the back of the net, confirming the spoils would be shared.

Attention will now turn to Dunston on Friday 24th October in the FA Trophy, with the Hornets looking to get over the line and through to the next round.
