Match Report: Newcastle United Women 3-3 Charlton Athletic Women
Newcastle United Women 3 Charlton Athletic Women 3
Ten-player Newcastle United Women conceded twice in second-half stoppage time in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Charlton Athletic Women at Kingston Park on Sunday.
The Magpies went into half-time 2-0 up thanks to a brace from Shania Hayles. The visitors responded soon after the break through Katie Bradley, but after Hayles completed her hat-trick in the 68th minute from the penalty spot, it seemed Newcastle would take all three points.
However captain Amber-Keegan Stobbs was sent off for Newcastle with ten minutes to go, and the visitors capitalised with Kayleigh Barton and a second for Bradley levelling things up at 3-3 in the dying seconds of the game.
Becky Langley’s side came into the game off the back of a 2-1 victory over Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear Derby last weekend. She made three changes with Hannah Greenwood, Lois Joel and Amy Andrews replacing Liv Watt, Racheal Furness and Jasmine McQuade.
Hayles opened the scoring for United just five minutes into the game smoothly knocking the ball past Charlton keeper Jessica Gray.
Only nine minutes later, Hayles scored her second of the game after being sent through on goal after a wonderful pass from Stobbs. Hayles’ brace gave The Magpies a two-goal advantage within the first 15 minutes.
Hayles was close to her first half hat-trick, but this time her effort was expertly saved by Gray in the Charlton goal.
Four minutes into the second half, Charlton pulled one back through Bradley after a poor attempt from Newcastle to clear the ball out of their box.
Newcastle were then awarded a penalty in the 67th minute after Joel was fouled inside the area. Hayes sent Gray the wrong way and secured her hat-trick.
At 3-1 up, The Magpies were reduced to ten in the 83rd minute when Stobbs was sent off for two yellow cards.
Charlton took advantage of this, and Barton pulled one back in stoppage-time. Just seconds later, Bradley levelled the score with her second goal of the game in the 95th minute, giving both teams a point.
Newcastle Women look to get back to winning ways as they travel to top of the league Birmingham City next, whereas Charlton will host Southampton in their next outing.
