Northern League Division Two Play-Off Final Match Report: Yarm & Eaglescliffe 0-0 Jarrow

Yarm & Eaglescliffe secured promotion to Step 5 for the first time in their history after a thrilling victory on penalties against Jarrow at Bedford Terrace in the Northern League Division Two Play-Off Final.

An end-to-end final came to a close when Callum Roberts saved Lewis Rutherford’s spot-kick in the shootout, sealing the Y&E’s promotion to Northern League Division One – after the league runners-up had reached 98 points in the regular season.

The Teesside outfit came into the match just a few days on from winning the North Riding Senior Cup on penalties against Division One side Boro Rangers at the Riverside Stadium.

As for Jarrow, they booked their spot in back-to-back play-off finals – losing to Thornaby on penalties last season – with a dramatic 7-6 win on penalties over FC Hartlepool last time out, after the game ended 2-2 in normal time.

Following a lively opening to the game, the visitors had a golden opportunity to take the lead on 12 minutes. Kieren Beattie lobbed the oncoming Roberts, with the ball on the verge floating home until Cameron Wild just scooped off the line. But the clearance went only as far as Beattie, whose strike inside the six-yard box soared over the bar.

Minutes later, Yarm attacked as Joshua Marshall beat his man and drove towards goal one-on-one with Jak Wells, opting to square towards Tom Atkinson. However, his pass was loose, allowing Jarrow to clear.

Shortly after, Harry Williams’ close-range strike flew just over the bar for the hosts, before the Blues’ Luke Hudson had an attempt drift narrowly wide of the bottom-right corner.

Early in the second period, Jarrow continued to probe as Ryan Hardie’s low effort deflected inches wide of the left corner, and the visitors attacked again on 70 minutes with two chances in quick succession. Josh Willis’ first-time effort was instinctively palmed away by Roberts, while Niall Smith’s powerful strike towards the top-right corner rattled the post.

In the closing stages of the half, Williams was at the heart of Yarm’s late pressure, with the forward seeing a close-range attempt cleared off the line by Jack Armstrong, before Wells saved his low shot one-on-one.

The hosts had another strike cleared off the line minutes later, as the game headed to extra-time.

After a cagey opening half, Jay Barber’s effort from a tight angle forced a smart stop from Roberts on 108 minutes, though, Steven Roberts’ half-volley from distance looped just over the bar with five minutes to play.

In the dying moments of the match, Josh Leonard couldn’t direct his glancing header on target for Jarrow, taking the final to penalties.

With the spot-kicks level at 4-4 – Willis firing off target and goalkeeper Wells remarkably scoring and saving a penalty – Isaac Coppinger converted in sudden death to give Yarm the advantage.

And Roberts guessed the right way for Rutherford’s decisive penalty, saving low to his right to seal a history-making promotion for the Y&E.
