Newcastle United 1-1 Ipswich Town: Match Report
Newcastle United are held to a point against Ipswich Town at the Gateshead International Stadium.
Beth Lumsden’s long range effort and Sophie Pickett’s finish were the deciders that saw both sides settle for a point.
Newcastle United Women came into this WSL2 clash in 5th place, and in their previous outing, the Magpies were defeated by league leaders Charlton Athletic at the Valley. Ipswich Town come into this game bottom of the WSL2, five points away from safety following a 1-1 draw with Bristol City in their previous game.
The Lasses began the game on the front foot and Newcastle United grabbed their first goal in the eighth minute of the game. Looking for someone in the box, Beth Lumsden’s cross went straight into the back of the net.
The Lasses had multiple chances to increase their lead, however the Newcastle United frontline were not really hitting the target, with three of their twelve attempts on target.
Ipswich Town never really challenged the Magpies backline inside the opening 40 minutes, however their first attack came inside 42 minutes when Lucy O’Brien charged forward – playing in Sophie Peskett who cuts inside past Kaitlyn Torpey and slotted it home to equalise.
Ipswich looked to kick on from the first goal, a cross put into the box by goal scorer Peskett was nodded down by Natasha Thomas into the feet of Leah Mitchell in the six yard box – whose shot was blocked by Aiofe Mannion as Newcastle escaped going down.
The second half begun slowly by both sides in the opening but Newcastle started to grow into the game as Torpey cuts inside into the box and falls in the box as the referee denied penalty claims.
Tanya Oxtoby made three changes in 62 minutes in hopes of claiming three points with Torpey, Greggory and Murphy making way for Demi Stokes, Lois Joel and Shayna Hayles.
Jordan Nobbs played the ball to Molly Pike inside 72 minutes of the game and her cross is punched out by Negri in goal, which comes off of Bethan Roe and Demi Stokes attempts a volley but is caught by the Ipswich goalkeeper.
Ipswich had a brilliant chance in the 92nd minute to take all three points as Rianna Dean is played through however Anna Tamminen makes herself big and stops Deans effort at goal.
Newcastle United travel away to Southampton on February 8th in the WSL2.
