Hebburn Town 0-2 Newcastle Benfield

Glen-Ravenhill 29 Brayson 76

Hebburn Town were knocked out of the Northern League Cup with a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle Benfield last night.

The result was their first loss in 2020 after a good run where they went eight games unbeaten.

Goals from Peter Glen-Ravenhill and Paul Brayson separated the two sides on the day.

After a fairly even start to the game, Hebburn came close in the 17th minute when Michael McKeown played through Michael Richardson and he took a touch in the air and the ball went wide.

Four minutes later, Ben Dibb-Fuller’s free kick went just over for the hosts.

Newcastle Benfield took the lead in the 29th minute when Reece Noble played a good ball over the top to Brayson who headed across goal to Glen-Ravenhill who smashed the ball home from close range.

Hebburn could’ve equalised six minutes later when Graeme Armstrong hit the post following a good ball through by Richardson.

The Hornets came close again in the 41st minute when Louis Storey back-heeled it to Tom Potter whose shot hit the post on its way out.

Kevin Bolam’s side really should’ve scored moments later when Armstrong lobbed the ball over the ‘keeper just wide of the mark.

Benfield came very close in the 75th minute when Glen-Ravenhill forced Hebburn ‘keeper Mark Foden out of his box and his shot went just wide.

Moments later, the visitors got their winner when Jack Donaghy gifted the ball to the opposition and Brayson played a one-two with Glen-Ravenhill and the veteran placed the ball in off the post.

Chances were few and far between after that and Hebburn never looked like getting back into the game.

Up next for the Hornets is Northallerton Town away from home on Saturday.
