Match Preview: Cambridge vs Sunderland
Sunderland AFC travel to the Abbey Stadium on Saturday to face Cambridge United, who currently sit 15th in EFL League One.
The home side come into this fixture looking to build on a positive performance which saw them take a point from Wigan Athletic on Tuesday in a 2-2 draw.
SAFC also drew their match on Tuesday against a ten-man Shrewsbury Town, with the score finishing 1-1.
That result left the Black Cats sitting 6th in the table, five points off the automatic promotion places with two games in hand.
Lee Johnson’s side have struggled for form lately, only winning one game out of their last five with a 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town and defeats to Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham and Charlton Athletic.
Sunderland also haven’t won away from home for over a month, with their last away win being the 4-0 demolition of Crewe Alexandra in October.
Johnson has since found himself under increasing pressure from the fans, who clearly feel the club should be performing better than their current form suggests.
This fixture certainly won’t be an easy one for SAFC and Cambridge can definitely pose a threat to a recently weak Sunderland defence.
The intervention of forward, Joe Ironside, will no doubt be vital for the home side with the striker scoring 8 goals in 19 matches so far this season.
Similarly, there is no doubt that Sunderland forward, Ross Stewart will play a pivotal role in any form of result on Saturday.
The Scotsman sits fourth in the top scorers in League One and has bagged 10 goals in 17 appearances this season.
