SAFC Ladies maintain grip on top spot with Sheffield thrashing
A Charlotte Potts hat-trick helped Sunderland Ladies go ten unbeaten in all competitions, as the Lasses thrashed Sheffield FC Women 6-1.
Sunderland couldn’t have wished for a better start and took the lead after just three minutes, top scorer Bridget Galloway converting calmly from the spot after being taken down by Sheffield’s Keeley Goodwin.
Sunderland dominated the early stages and it wasn’t long before they doubled their lead, Galloway scoring her second of the match following great work from Louise Griffiths in the 20th minute, meaning the lasses went into the break two goals to the good.
The second half belonged to Charlotte Potts however, with the centre half scoring a sensational 15 minute hatrick, hitting goals in the 64th, 69th and 79th minute, although Amy Beck did manage to grab a consolation for Sheffield in between Potts’ second and third strike.
Despite the game long being won, there was to be no let up from the Lasses as Georgia Gibson added a sublime chip in the last minute to complete the rout for the Lasses.
Another resounding win had further reason to celebrate, as Rachel Woolston made her long awaited return to the side as an 80th minute sub after 378 days out injured.
The win sees the Lasses solidify their place at the top of the league, as they racked up their fourth league win on the bounce.
SAFC XI: Moan, Herron, Potts, Griffiths (Woolston 80), Mullen (Warren 75), Lambert, Ramshaw (Cottam 64), Gibson, Barker, Galloway, Farrugia.
