Sunderland West End 1-3 Birtley Town – Match Report

Birtley Town extended their unbeaten run to four games and moved to second after an away win against Sunderland West End.

Birtley started the game strong, Aidan Rutledge scoring in the fifth and 22nd minute put the away side two goals up at half time.

In the 79th minute Birtley made it 3-0, as Alex Francis headed home from a corner. The home side scored a consolation goal in injury time through Samuel Peat.

 Birtley were looking to extend their unbeaten run to four games, picking up impressive results including a 3-3 draw to top of the league Boro Rangers. Sunderland West End were looking to end their eight game winless run.

Birtley opened the scoring early, Rutledge rounding the ‘keeper and scoring after a flick on by Glenn Hargrave.

In the 22nd minute, Birtley won a penalty as Rutledge was tripped in the box. He confidently stepped up and sent goalkeeper Bussey the wrong way, slotting away his penalty into the bottom right corner.

Birtley made it 3-0 in the 79th minute, a delivery from the right hand side from Lewis Exley was headed in by Alex Francis at the near post into the top right hand corner. Sunderland West End scored a consolation in the 91st minute however, a delivery from the right hand side finding Peat, who headed home into the bottom right corner
