North-East journalist gives his say on Callum Wilson’s World Cup call up

Callum Wilson has been handed a World Cup call-up following a strong start to the season, with North East journalist Craig Hope saying Wilson’s call up was “fully deserved.”

Multiple others have also been selected for the World Cup from the North East including Nick Pope and Kieran Trippier, who were selected alongside Wilson, Fabian Schar for Switzerland and Bruno Guimarães for Brazil.

Gareth Southgate was left with a tough decision over his striker options having to leave some big names out of the squad including Tammy Abraham and Ivan Toney.

After recent performances Gareth Southgate has decided to go for Callum Wilson as his back up to captain Harry Kane after netting three in his last three.

Southgate was also left with a difficult decision on whether to select James Maddison for the trip to Qatar after showing fine form in the league, but when decision time came he selected the attacking threat, leaving many fans happy.

The final surprise came in the midfield Southgate decided to select Chelsea youngster Connor Gallagher after praising his fantastic work rate with the manager saying; “He’s fantastic at pressing the ball and there’s going to be moments in games when we need certain attributes.”

Local journalist Craig Hope gave his thoughts on Wilson gaining his call up saying “Callum Wilson is the right pick.”

He added that “The role he has now of an impact substitute, could suit him perfectly.”

Hope discussed the struggle for Wilson leading up to the tournament by saying “The bout of Covid he had was not ideal but if you’re taking positives at least he’s protected his hamstrings.”
