Team Sunderland’s National League Women’s Futsal side began their Women’s Super Series campaign with a 7-6 victory over Southampton Aztecs at Hartpury College on Saturday.
In their first match at the highest level of Futsal in the UK, Team Sunderland were deserving winners with five goals from Nichole Havery as well as one each for Amy Richardson and Victoria Curtis.
A blistering start saw Team Sunderland race into a 4-1 lead at half time with a hat-trick from Havery and one from Richardson.
The second half was a more even contest with Southampton Aztecs bringing the scores level at 5-5 with five minutes remaining.
Goals from Curtis and Havery gave Team Sunderland a 7-5 lead and while Aztecs pulled one back it was not enough to deny Team Sunderland an opening day victory.
Victoria Curtis said: “It was great to start the season with a victory, it sets us up nicely for the coming matches.
“For our first season at this level getting off the mark was so important and we’re excited to see what we can do this season.”
Team Sunderland’s next fixture is against Bootham Futsal Club on 23rd September.
