China Open: Rublev upset, Alcaraz, Medvedev secure Quarterfinal appearance
The Final 16 took to the court in Beijing for the ATP 500 tournament.
No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz continued to show his dominance on the court after defeating Italian Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 claiming his 60th win of the season. Alcaraz is looking for another title this year as he tries to reclaim the No. 1 ranking from Novak Djokovic.
Beijing has welcomed eight of the top 10 on the ATP tour, No. 1 Djokovic and No. 9 Taylor Fritz did not appear at the China Open.
No. 3 Daniil Medvedev, No. 4 Jannik Sinner, No. 7 Alexander Zverev, and No. 10 Casper Ruud all secured a spot in the quarter-final as the race to make the ATP Finals in November heats up.
Grigor Dimitrov takes down No. 8 Holger Rune 6-3, 7-5. Dimitrov’s control during his service games is evident having only allowed for 2 break point opportunities for Rune, one of which was saved by the Bulgarian. Dimitrov will continue his hunt for his first title of the year in Beijing.
Andrey Rublev, who has made all Grand Slam quarterfinals this year, barring the Roland Garros, was upset by Ugo Humbert 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 in his quest to claim his third title of the year.
The quarter-finals have been set: Alcaraz v Ruud (3-0), Dimitrov v Sinner (1-1), Zverev v Nicolas Jarry (3-2), Humbert v Medvedev (2-0). The China Open Men’s Final will be held on Wednesday 4 October.
