Match Report: Durham Women 0 – 1 Sunderland Women
Sunderland claimed bragging rights in the North East after beating Durham in the River Wear derby in the Women’s Championship.
Katie Kitching put Sunderland 1-0 up just before half time and it would prove to be the only goal of an edgy game.
The victory for the Black Cats came as they looked to extend their unbeaten run to nine games and solidify a push for promotion to the Women’s Super League and with it a seat at the top table of English Women’s football.
Kitching whipped a superb free kick into the top left corner from a tight angle in added time of the first half.
Sunderland survived a late flurry of chances from Durham with Claudia Moan producing some fine saves. A late Durham penalty shout for handball was also dismissed.
Sunderland remain unbeaten and sit at the top of the Women’s Championship. Durham will remain in seventh for the time being as teams around them play in later kick offs.
Durham and Sunderland face off again in the Continental Tyres Cup on Wednesday, November 8 at Eppleton Colliery.
