Match Report: Sunderland Men’s 3rds 2-7 York St John’s 4ths (i2i)

Sunderland men’s 3rds have fallen to third in their division as a depleted squad was thumped by York St John’s International Academy 7-2.

Sunderland took the lead though Christian Casey and went in to the break a goal to the good.

However, the second half saw a rapid collapse as York were 3-1 up just 10 minutes into the second half.

Over the course of the second half York scored 4 more and Sunderland got a late consolation.

The 2nds started the game six points behind local rivals Newcastle, hoping to capitalise on their two games in hand.

York started the better of the two sides but found themselves behind as Casey got on the end of a misplaced pass and tucked the ball home.

That is how it stayed until half-time, but St John’s came out firing in the second half.

A deflected cross landed perfectly for number 11 to get them level, and just a minute later number 13 capitalised on a short backpass and simply a tapped in.

The 3rd came just minutes later as number 11 grabbed his brace after beating a defender and slotting past the goalkeeper. It took just another ten minutes for him to complete his hat-trick with a penalty.

Sunderland looked all out of ideas but the goals kept coming for York. On minute 78 as number 43 found space in the box to finish with his left foot. With just five minutes to go a cross was met by the head of number 20, saved well, but the rebound was unstoppable.

The rout was finally up as number 11 put the final nail in the coffin and grabbed his fourth in the 90th minute.

In added time winger Zain Saeed managed to weave his way through the defence and score a consolation goal for Sunderland which was immediately followed by the referees final whistle.
