5 Players Sunderland could sign this summer

Liam Millar, FC Basel – Millar spent the last season on loan at Preston North End, registering 5 goals and 5 assists in 35 appearances. The Canadian mostly featured as a left winger, occasionally filling in as a wing back for the Lilywhites. Just 24 years old, the tricky winger could be seen as an ideal replacement for Jack Clarke, who seems increasingly likely to move to the Premier League in the summer. Millar could be available on a cut price deal, due to his FC Basel contract expiring in the summer of next year.

Jay Stansfield, Fulham – Stansfield spent last season on loan at Birmingham City. Despite facing relegation to League One, Stansfield had an excellent individual season grabbing 12 goals and 2 assists in 43 appearances. The clinical finisher could be available for another loan due to Fulham having multiple striking options. Stansfield was close to joining Sunderland last summer before he decided to sign for Birmingham instead.

Divin Mubama, West Ham United – Sunderland are the supposed frontrunners to sign Mubama, according to the Athletic. Mubama has turned down new contracts from the Hammers in the search for first team football, and Sunderland could be the perfect place for him. The 19-year-old has already made 12 senior appearances for West Ham and would provide depth upfront for Sunderland.

Harrison Burrows, Peterborough United – Despite having 3 talented left backs, Sunderland could look to make a move for Burrows. Aji Alese, Dennis Cirkin and Niall Huggins have all faced lengthy layoffs with injury over the last 2 seasons. Burrows played 45 league games for The Posh last season, registering 6 goal contributions and 14 assists. Peterborough would no doubt command a hefty fee for Burrows but he could be a key addition for Sunderland. Burrows also provides a lot of versatility, he can play as a left back, central midfielder and an attacking midfielder.

Charlie Cresswell, Leeds United – Cresswell is a towering centre back who could be the perfect partner for Dan Ballard. Despite not featuring much for Leeds this season, Cresswell has proven he can play at championship level after playing 28 games on loan at Millwall in the 22/23 season. Cresswell could also be the perfect replacement for Ballard if he was to leave the club in the summer. Standing at 6’5, Cresswell would likely be available even if Leeds don’t achieve promotion, due to other defensive options at the club.
