North East boxing talent wins his first amateur fight

New local boxing talent Aaron Cunningham won his first amateur boxing match by unanimous decision against Lewis Latife of Marsden ABC.

Cunningham entered the ring in his first outing despite only starting to box less than a year ago, making his victory even more impressive.

The first round began with Latife being the immediate aggressor and Cunningham boxing predominantly on the back-foot. However, Cunningham landed several clean short combinations on Latife which made the Marsden boxer stumble back as a result allowing Cunningham to land again this time on the front foot.

Round two saw both boxers retain their high guard from the first round although Cunningham would appear to be the aggressor this round, forcing Latife to box on the back-foot. Latife utilised the clinch in the latter parts of the round to provide himself a break from Cunningham’s relentless pressure.

The last and final round saw both boxers begin to tire with both of their punches appearing more laborious. Despite the slower pace Cunningham retained the buzzsaw type pressure on Latife, therefore able to see out the round.

The fight would be ruled a unanimous decision for Cunningham bringing his record to 1-0.
