Team Sunderland’s Netball Firsts ran out winners in a close clash at Cityspace.
The first quarter was a close-fought clash with the hosts leading 12-8 on the whistle.
Sunderland won the second 15 by a score of 16-12, taking the score to 28-20.
The third quarter saw Sunderland lead 17-14 with the score sat 45-34
And the final quarter finished 16-12 in favour of York St John leaving score 57-50 to Team Sunderland.
The visitors got forward early and missed a great chance to take the lead before Sunderland player Ella Trott was forced off with injury 22 seconds in.
After the delay both sides traded blows with Sunderland taking a two goal lead on two separate occasions before being pegged back.
Thanks to sublime finishing from Sunderland goal shooter Sophie Hutchindon, the hosts pulled away to lead 12-8.
York were disappointed to see a late goal disallowed due to a foul in the build-up.
The second quarter started with three early goals, two for York St John before Sunderland Goal Keeper Ashley Camga found herself down injured.
Sunderland’s Goal Attack Georgia Turnbull joined the action as Sunderland netted five of the last six goals to extend their lead at half time.
Sunderland didn’t let up in the second half with Hutchinson adding another just six seconds in.
The hosts began the third strong scoring six seconds in. Great combinations involving Rosie Mulcahy and Phoebie Edwards saw Sunderland control the opening stages.
However, York valiantly fought back scoring eight of the last 11 goals with the score 45-34 heading into the final quarter.
The final 15 was a nervy quarter with the visitors piling pressure onto Sunderland. However, the hosts did just enough towards the end to keep York at arms length winning 57-50 with some impressive performances across the board.
