Sunderland Fourths 1-0 York St John Fourths
Sunderland Uni fourth team defeated York St John one nil in a tense Varsity match.
The home team started off pretty sluggishly with York finding the net in the fifth minute after some nice build up play, only for the offside flag to rule the goal out.
After a big let off, the home side began to grow into the game – coming close to breaking the deadlock in the twentieth minute when the Sunderland striker had his shot tipped onto the post by the York keeper.
York then began to dominate again, with many looping corners into the box proving to be difficult for the home side to deal with.
It was Sunderland who looked to end the half the stronger side though – after having a free kick crash off the underside of the bar and bounce away it looked like the half was going to end nil-nil with time running out.
However in the 42nd minute the deadlock was finally broken when the Sunderland winger Uwhomano Ipori cut inside and whipped the ball into the top right corner, putting the home side in the driving seat going into the second half.
The second half started in a similar fashion to the first, with York dominating the early stages and Sunderland slowly coming into the game.
It was the away team who had the first big chance of the half in the 68th minute, after Sunderland’s shoddy free kick routine sent them off on the counter but a poor effort from the York striker let the hosts off the hook.
York continued to knock on the door and went close again in the 70th minute, however the home team continued to defend well. York piled on the pressure right until the final whistle but Sunderland held on for a huge win over their Varsity rivals.
