Match Report: Hebburn Town 2-1 Gainsborough Trinity
Hebburn Town extended their lead at the top of the Northern Premier League Premier Division with a 2-1 win over Gainsborough Trinity.
Gary Martin and Aidan Heywood scored early on to give Hebburn a 2-0 lead, before Gainsborough answered back with a header from Jack Leckie in the 16th minute.
Gainsborough couldn’t score again, with Isaac Allan saving a 68th-minute penalty.
The visitors began the game with the upper hand with two shots straying just wide of Allan’s goal.
A few minutes later, the referee pointed to the penalty spot after Ethan Wood was fouled in the box, and Gary Martin showed his composure and struck the ball into the back of the net, sending David Robson the wrong way.
Not long after, Heywood slotted the ball into the bottom left corner and Robson’s hand wasn’t enough to stop the captain doubling Hebburn’s lead.
Yet, Gainsborough replied straight away with a header from a cross which Jack Leckie converted.
The home side sustained a few attacks before half time with a chance from Heywood which Robson saved.
Shortly after half time, a brilliant challenge by Robert Briggs prevented Gainsborough being in on goal.
Heywood gave a penalty away in the 67th minute, but Allan was to the rescue as Frank Mulhern’s poor attempt down the middle was saved.
Hebburn remain leading the Northern Premier Division and look to continue the winning streak against Warrington Town away from home next Saturday at 3pm.
