Match Report: Newcastle 0-1 Durham WSL 2: Durham Smash and Grab Victory on the Final Day
Durham ended their season on a high note with a North East derby victory on the final day.
Amber-Keegan Stobbs’ strike just before halftime was the difference in a low-scoring affair.
Despite having 9 shots at Durham’s goal, the Magpies were only able get two of them on target after a strong defensive showing from the visitors.
Nine minutes in, Jordan Nobbs crossed the ball towards Oona Sevenius in the middle of the box. The ball flew over Catriona Sheppard’s hands and Sevenius, going across the face of goal and just missing the far post.
3 Minutes later, Nobbs got a header all alone in the box, but put it over the bar.
In the 40th minute, Michaela Foster played a hopeful ball into Stobbs who received it just outside the box. Stobbs got the ball past Aoife Mannion with her first touch, then lobbed Anna Tamminen with her second to give Durham the lead.
Looking to respond quickly from the kickoff, Emily Murphy dribbled the ball into the box from the left wing. Beth Lumsden was waiting in the middle, but Murphy decided to shoot instead, hitting the side netting.
In the 68th minute, Grace Ayre failed to clear a Newcastle cross, instead hitting it to Lumsden in the box whose shot went over the bar.
In the 80th minute, Grace Collinson had a header unopposed but her effort was too high.
Four minutes later, Nobbs had a shot from range that bounced across the face of goal, but ended up going wide.
Two minutes before 90, Nobbs was taken down by Collinson on the edge of the box leading to appeals for a penalty, but the ref gave nothing.
In time added on, Demi Stokes played a great ball into Emilia Larsson in the box who had time to shoot. She attempted to take if first time however and hit the ball well clear of goal in Newcastle’s last real chance of the match.
