Brighton 2-1 Newcastle United: Magpies fall to familiar foe despite Woltemade wizardry
Newcastle United’s away struggles came to light once again, as the Magpies lost 2-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on Saturday.
Nick Woltemade gave Newcastle hope through a creative finish to level the game, but ex-Mackem Danny Welbeck was, once again, the point of difference, with his two goals securing the three points for the hosts.

Eddie Howe’s side went into the game with an unchanged side from their 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest and 0-4 win over Union St.Gilloise in the Champions League.
However, a strong performance was needed from the Magpies, having never beaten Brighton at the Amex over 8 visits in the Premier League (D5 L3).
It took the Seagulls 41 minutes to open the scoring, as Georgino Rutter exploited the gap between the Newcastle midfield and defence, before slipping Welbeck through for an easy finish against Nick Pope.
It was the first time Newcastle’s away defence had been punished this season, with Sven Botman being caught out of position.
The Magpies continued to look lethargic and out-of-sync in the second half, until Woltemade stepped up once again in the 76th minute to drag the Magpies back into the game.
His audacious back-heel flick from a Lewis Miley pass rolled into the bottom left corner; once again demonstrating his technical and creative ability.

Newcastle would then grow into the game and begin to take control until the 84th minute, as Welbeck would seal Brighton’s victory.
Mats Wieffer saw a shot blocked by Dan Burn on the edge of the box, and the Newcastle defence did not react quick enough – allowing Welbeck to finish into the bottom left corner.
Eddie Howe’s side have had a turbulent start to the season with only nine points in eight games, sitting 13th in the Premier League.
This position will not be deemed good enough by Howe, and important players, such as Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga, will need to step up to the level needed to get the Magpies’ season back on track.
