West Brom 2-3 Middlesbrough: Burgzorg’s late winner earns Boro crucial three points in Championship promotion race
Middlesbrough earned a brilliant three points in a five-goal thriller against West Brom at the Hawthorns on Friday night in the Sky Bet Championship.
Charlie Taylor’s comical own goal and a Samuel Silvera strike gave Boro a two-goal advantage, before goals from Isaac Price and Jed Wallace levelled the game for the hosts, until a late goal from Delano Burgzorg ensured the points went to Teesside.

A win would have seen Boro close the gap to Coventry, but it was the hosts who had a brilliant chance to take the lead with only minutes on the clock. Luke Ayling lost the ball to Aune Heggebo, but Sol Brynn was out quickly to smother his attempted shot.
Despite that early chance, Boro looked the better team and took the lead just before half time. Alex Gilbert’s well-struck shot crashed off the post and hit Taylor on the rebound – going into his own net off the post.
In the second half, Boro doubled their lead with a rare venture forward. Morgan Whittaker’s pass allowed Silvera to stand up his man at the edge of the box and drive the ball past Josh Griffiths.
Boro should have added a third when Adilson Malanda’s header bounced just over the bar from close range.
Despite Boro seemingly killing off the game, West Brom earned themselves a goal back, when Price smashed home a well-worked free-kick from just outside the penalty area with 15 minutes to play.
Price almost doubled his goal tally instantly, when Wallace squared the ball just outside of the box, but his shot was narrowly wide.
West Brom’s five-minute comeback was complete with ten minutes to play, when Samuel Iling-Junior’s cut-back was diverted away from Price by Hayden Hackney, but his sliding interception fell straight to the feet of Wallace, who slotted it past Sol Brynn.

Yet, Boro inflicted late heartache for West Brom.
A brilliant pass from Silvera played Burgzorg through, with his shot from a tight-angle beating the keeper and earning Boro a valuable three points in the race for the automatic promotion.
Boro next play Stoke City at the Bet365 Stadium on Wednesday at 8pm.
