Sunderland 2-1 Crystal Palace: Brian Brobbey scores in comeback victory in the Premier League

Sunderland extended their unbeaten run at home to 11 matches, with a 2-1 victory against Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.

Yeremy Pino’s first-half strike for Palace was met with goals from Enzo Le Fee and Brian Brobbey to give Sunderland the win.

With Oliver Glasner and Marc Guehi confirming their departures in the build-up to the game, Palace went into Saturday’s match after a rough couple of days, but saw the game’s first opportunity.

A rare mistake from Granit Xhaka allowed Palace to break forward with Pino, who slid the ball to Mateta, but Robin Roefs was out quickly to close the angle and saved the shot well.

Sunderland should have took the lead when Le Fee’s corner found Trai Hume free in the box, but his header went wide.

With half an hour played, Palace took the lead from their own corner. Will Hughes’ corner was punched clear by Roefs, but it fell straight to the feet of Pino, who struck it into the roof of the net.

Palace’s lead lasted only three minutes, as a great cross from Nordi Mukiele was left by Brobbey for Le Fee, who calmly passed the ball into the corner of the net.

Palace nearly responded straight away when Mateta got the better of Dan Ballard and made his way to the by-line, and his cross found the head of Tyrick Mitchell, who put the header wide.

Sunderland were perhaps unlucky not to earn a penalty when Romaine Mundle was bundled over off the ball by Justin Devenny, but the referee waved the claims away.

With 20 minutes left, Sunderland finally found a goal through Brobbey. Sadiki drove the ball past multiple Palace defenders before slotting it to Brobbey, whose outside-of-the-foot strike went into the net off the bar.

The Black Cats almost extended their lead with a superb team goal. Le Fee’s chipped pass found Brobbey in space, who chipped the ball across to Hume, but his well-struck shot was tipped onto the bar by Henderson.

In the 90th minute, Sunderland again almost extended their lead, when Eliezer Mayenda’s shot looked destined for the bottom corner, but Henderson somehow clawed it away; albeit straight to the feet of Ballard, whose shot was straight at the Palace ‘keeper.

Sunderland next play away to West Ham at the London Stadium on Saturday 24th at 12:30pm.
