Sunderland U23s win first league game for nearly two years

Benji Kimpioka bagged a brace today

Sunderland U23s defeated Newcastle United u23s 4-0 to give them their first league win since February 2019.

The U23 derby took place at Little Benton Academy and the Black Cats were comfortable winners thanks to goals from Benji Kimpioka, Josh Hawkes and Cieran Dunne.

Today’s win was Elliot Dickman’s first in 30 attempts and provided some much needed relief for an Academy under fire.

As for Newcastle, it shows the weakness of their current U23 squad as they fell to a defeat against a team that has been the whipping boys of the Premier League 2 for the last few seasons.

Hawkes gave Sunderland the lead on the stroke of half time, his first since signing from Hartlepool this past summer.

Kimpioka celebrated his new contract by doubling Sunderland’s lead early in the second half.

Full back Cieran Dunne sealed the win by scoring a third goal with 20 minutes to play before Kimpioka completed the rout from the spot in the 81st minute.
