Monkwearmouth’s year 11s delivered the perfect end to their school journey as they edged out a close affair against Castle View to win the Cleminson Cup.

The deadlock was broken near the end of what could only be described as a fair battle beforehand, as year 10’s Dan Atkinson rolled the ball slowly into the net.

It is a welcome result for Monkwearmouth because they lost out against Southmoor in 2019 in the final – it is the academy’s first triumph in the Cleminson Cup since 2018 when they beat Kepier.

A statement on the academy’s Facebook said: “The last dance for our superb Y11’s who signed off with a special performance to lift the cup tonight.

“In a highly competitive game against a brilliant Castle View team the boys showed all their togetherness and team spirit to pick up a fantastic 1-0 victory with a goal from our Y10 Dan Atkinson.

“We are super proud of you all and to see you all with big smiles alongside the brilliant support from all your parents was a brilliant moment and one to remember for the Academy.”
