Sports Ball 2023 – Team Sunderland ready for annual awards ceremony

The majority of Team Sunderland clubs have reached the end of an eventful 2022/23 season and they’re ready to celebrate at the annual Sports Ball.

At Ramside Hall in Durham a variety of awards will be presented to commemorate the efforts and successes of Team Sunderland members across the season.

Last year’s big winners were Women’s Volleyball who picked up The Peter Fiddler Award for Team of the Year award after an incredible season where they maintained a 100% record throughout their league campaign, dropping just three sets all season. To top off their season they also reached the final of the Northern Conference Cup.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Sunderland, Sir David Bell, will select this year’s Club of the Year and the Vice Chancellor’s Charity awards. All awards that will be presented on the night are listed below:

  • Club Colours – Awarded to an individual who goes above and beyond for their club
  • Committee of the Year – Awarded to Club committee that has gone above and beyond for their club members, Team Sunderland & the wider University
  • Coach of the Year – Awarded to a coach who has gone above and beyond for their team
  • Unsung Hero Award – Awarded to an individual who is not usually noticed or praised for their hard work, courage, or great achievements
  • Special Recognition Award – Awarded to an individual or club that has excelled in a particular club, event, sport that sometimes goes unrecognised
  • Team Sunderland Reporter of the Year – Awarded to an individual who has gone above and beyond to provide coverage for clubs and members
  • Ainsley Charles Award for Most Improved Individual – Awarded to an individual who has excelled in their chosen sport
  • Most Improved Team – Awarded to a team that significantly improved across the course of the season
  • Performance of the Year – Awarded to a club for a standout individual performance or fixture
  • The individual who achieved the most for their club – Awarded to an individual who has gone above and beyond for their club and members
  • The Peter Fiddler Award for Team of the Year – Awarded to a team that have made a significant impact or achieved significant results over the past season
  • Sports Person of the Year – Awarded to an individual that has achieved significant results over the past season
  • Full & Half University Colours – Awarded to individuals who have competed in their chosen sport anywhere from county level through to international level
  • Vice Chancellors Charity Award – Awarded to a club he feels has gone above and beyond in their charitable efforts not only in their chosen sport but the wider community and University
  • Vice Chancellor’s Club of the Year – Chosen by the Vice Chancellor and awarded to a club he feels has gone above and beyond to represent themselves not only in their chosen sport but the wider community and University

There will be plenty to celebrate for everyone at Team Sunderland as this season’s achievements include multiple promotions across Netball, Women’s Football and Women’s Futsal as well as the victories in both the TeesWear Varsity against Teesside and the Clash of the Minsters against York St John.
