FA Trophy Final: Gateshead 0-1 Halifax Town – Match Report
Gateshead suffered an unfortunate result at Wembley because of mistakes at the back.
Halifax opened the scoring in the 44th minute. Louis Storey played a cheap pass to Halifax’s Jamie Cooke when he tried to pass it back to the goalkeeper. Cooke intercepted the pass and tapped it into the goal. An absolute howler from Gateshead’s perspective.
There weren’t many clear-cut chances between either side, but Gateshead’s best chance came in the 63rd minute when Adam Campbell’s long-range effort went over the crossbar.
Halifax could have easily gone 2-0 up in the 71st minute when former Gateshead man Jack Hunter’s effort was saved well by James Montgomery.
This was always going to be a tough fixture for Gateshead, Halifax were unbeaten in nine but Mike Williamson’s side hoped that wins from their last two fixtures could help build the momentum needed to achieve success.
In the seventh minute, Campbell was looking to give Gateshead an early lead, but his shot was blocked by Jack Senior.
A corner in the 35th minute taken by Greg Olley landed on Owen Bailey’s head and went over the bar when he tried to flick it on.
Angelo Cappello dragged his shot wide of the far post when he was searching for the opener for Halifax in the 37th minute.
Mellinic Alli was an absolute nuisance for Gateshead, in the 65th minute he dribbled past three Gateshead defenders like they weren’t there but unfortunately for him, he couldn’t generate the power on the shot to test Montgomery.
