Match Report: Northumbria Women 2nds 1-3 Sunderland Women 1sts

Megan Sprot scored a spectacular hat-trick as Sunderland secured a well deserved victory away from home in their BUCS fixture against Northumbria 2nds.

Sunderland opened the scoring in the 35th minute, before doubling their lead two minutes into the second half.

Northumbria halved the deficit after 68 minutes, but Sunderland sealed the victory in the 72nd minute.

Both Sunderland and Northumbria went into the match in the bottom two of the league, making this a must win game for the two sides.

Northumbria started the match the stronger side, with a number of shots saved by Mia Tierney-Tomlinson, until 10 minutes before the break when a shot from Sprot saw the visitors 1-0 up.

Sprot struck again just a few minutes into the second half to make it 2-0 after catching the Northumbria goalkeeper off her line and rolling it past her.

There was a great defensive display shown by Sunderland to keep the score at 2-0, with consecutive shots from Northumbria cleared off the line to prevent the home side scoring.

Northumbria continued to press with a few chances, albeit nothing too troubling, until a shot beat Tierney-Tomlinson, giving the hosts a goal back.

However, it took less than five minutes before Sunderland restored their two-goal lead, with an assist from Cynthia Asogwa getting Sprot her hat-trick and Sunderland the win.
