‘You have to be at it all the time’ – Ferguson reflects on Newcastle Benfield’s win over Crook Town

Newcastle Benfield manager Andrew Ferguson was pleased with his side’s strong performance and win over Crook Town.

Benfield got back to winning ways beating The Black and Ambers at the MKM stadium thanks to a goal from Joe Ames. This result sees the Lions move back up to 15th in the table.

Ferguson spoke with the media team after the game.

Thoughts on the game…

“Very pleased with the win, being my first home game in charge, very good performance I thought. I know Mattie so that means they’ll be a good side, they had a good win during the week so we knew we would have a tough test. I thought we were very good today, it was a strong 1-0 win, and we had two or three good chances that we should really score but happy with the three points first and foremost.”

On returning from suspension and being back in the dugout…

“Love it, it’s me it’s where I am. I’ve always loved coaching and managing, but I love being on the sidelines it drives us. I like to give that little extra 5% and 10% to the boys giving them information and enthusiasm all the time, loved my first game and it was a decent crowd as well.”

Did the team carry out the gameplan…

“We looked at it and I thought the 11 that were out there were absolutely fantastic, we didn’t really want to change but we had to just for legs because we didn’t want to fatigue and with the fresh legs we got the goal. We knew we had to dig in against Crook because they’re a big physical side and they are always capable of scoring goals. We thought to keep ourselves compact and try and play with a pace down the sides and from the middle of the pitch later on.”

How will you take this win into next week…

“We’ve had a decent start since we’ve come in but during the week the lads have been putting in loads of minutes and I think that’s replicating on the pitch in terms of the results we’re getting. It will be another busy week, Tuesday and Thursday will be tough sessions, and we’ll get great numbers. They’ll put the effort in during the week and we’ll take that into next Saturday, I’ve said this prior, they’re all big games, you have to be at it all the time, we’ll work hard during the week and be at it next weekend.”

Up next for Ferguson’s side is another home game at the MKM stadium against West Allotment Celtic.
