Match Report: 1-1 Sunderland vs Wolves
Sunderland faced Wolverhampton Wanderers at Moulinex, with the black cats being held to a draw by an already relegated wolves side, with Santi Bueno’s header crushing European hopes.
The two Goals came from two defenders, Nordi Mukiele and Santi Bueno, both goals directly from corners.
Mukiele headed the Mackems in front in the 14th minute, with a well whipped cross from the Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka, for his 6th assist of the season. Mukiele has now scored two goals for Sunderland, both coming against wolves.
Dan Ballard was shown a straight red card for violent conduct, after pulling the hair of Wolves striker Tolu Arokodare, which meant that the black cats were down to ten-men in the 24th minute. The dismissal of the Northern Irish defender means that he will miss the remainder of the season.
After the red card the momentum had switched to the home side by having a number advantage over the Black Cat defence, with pressure being put onto Robin Roefs it remained 1-0 going into half time.
Santi Bueno’s second half header came also from a corner, taken by Hugo Bueno, the Uruguayan centre back headed Wolves back into the game, their first goal in 47 days, as they would try an go onto to beat ten-men Sunderland.
Xhaka would be the only player in a blue shirt to coming close to the back of the net in the second half, with his strike just wide of the post. Mateus Mane would further test Roefs going into the final stages of the match, chasing their fourth win of the season.
Sunderland have submitted an appeal to the straight red card shown to Ballard, in the hopes that it gets overturned, so he can feature in the last three fixtures for the Black Cats.
Sunderland still remain in contention for the European places, with still being three points of Europe, they look to bounce back against an in form Manchester United side. Wolves on the other hand will look to end their disappointing season off on a high note.
