Sheffield Wednesday 0-1 Middlesbrough: Boro win back-to-back games to put pressure onto league leaders Coventry.
Middlesbrough earned back-to-back Sky Bet Championship victories, as they beat a battling Sheffield Wednesday side by a single goal on Wednesday night.
An early goal by Morgan Whittaker was enough to take three points back to the Riverside.
Rob Edwards was hoping for a continuation of the performance he saw last week in the win against Ipswich, naming an unchanged line up.
Boro started strong and within the first five minutes, Morgan Whittaker passed the ball into the net, after a great cut back from Burgzorg for his second goal in two games.
In the 13th minute, Boro’s strong start continued, with Burgzorg fizzing a cross on the floor, but Conway put it just wide.
Lumley’s poor start to the game continued, when in the 21st minute, he dawdled on the ball and Conway capitalised – taking it off his feet before he is taken down, but the referee however gave no foul; much to the surprise of the travelling fans.
Boro’s pressure seemed to be mounting, with another golden chance missed in the 27th minute, as Burgzorg clipped the ball to the far post for Conway to glance a header over the bar.
Sheffield Wednesday had a rare venture in the Middlesbrough half on the half-hour mark, when the ball was driven into Bannan, who shot first time, but it was well over the bar.
It seemed only a matter of time before Middlesbrough doubled their advantage, and five minutes before half time, Conway’s well timed run saw him one-on-one with Lumley, who pulled off a brilliant save to end the attack.
On the stroke of half time, Lumley was called into action again, after a nice cutback reached Burgzorg, but his well-hit half-volley was matched by a great save by Lumley.
Sheffield Wednesday came out the stronger in the first few minutes of the second half, with Bannan’s corner reaching the head of Iorfa, and his header was deflected, wrong footing the keeper Brynn, but he still managed to punch it away.
Boro seemed to get there attacking mojo back in the 60th minute, as Brittain’s cutback reached Browne on the edge of the box. His shot was deflected straight to Conway on the six-yard line, but the shot was rushed and straight at Lumley
Wednesday’s defence was once again breached in the 91st minute, as Nypan slipped the ball into the path of Kaly Sene, who beat his man, but was thwarted by another one-on-one save from Lumley.
Boro’s win kept them within one point from league leaders Coventry, while extending their advantage over the teams behind them, with Stoke dropping points.
