Gateshead FC vs Truro Town match report: The Heed comeback from two-goals to snatch a point at the Gateshead International Stadium.

The Tinners rewarded their away contingent who broke the record for the longest ever away trip in English football for a competitive fixture with their 920 mile round-trip to Tyneside.

Two goals in the first half from Dominic Johnson-Fisher and Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain put Truro ahead before a second half resurgence from The Heed via Kain Adom and Frank Nouble ensured the points were shared.

Early on, Johnson-Fisher showed great strength to fend off Ibrahim Bakare, before he rifled the ball into the roof of the net from the right-side of the six-yard box, giving Truro an early lead.

Just minutes later Gateshead midfielder Fenton John was presented with a huge chance to level proceedings, however the midfielder couldn’t convert seeing his effort fly over the crossbar from just inside the 18-yard box.

10 minutes after their opener the Tinners had the ball in Gateshead’s net again, but to the relief of Alun Armstrong’s side Luke Jephcott ran offside before slotting it past Tiernan Brooks, meaning his goal wouldn’t stand.

On the half-hour mark Truro were centimetres away from making it two, through some electric play by Johnson-Fisher who went on a mazing run before dragging his left-footed shot just past the post.

The Tinners looked very good for their first National League win on the road this season, going two-nil up inside the 40th minute. Luke Jephcott’s curling cross was bundled in at the back post by Christian Oxlade-Chamberlin, marking his first ever National League goal.

Boos rang around the GIS at half-time, with the scoreline reading Gateshead nil, Truro City two.

Two changes at the break for the Heed saw Kyle Hurst replaced by Gateshead’s top scorer Kain Adom, and Will Flint making way for Max Melbourne.

Nine minutes in, Armstrong’s substitutes would turn good, Kain Adom – isolated on the right-wing – beat his man with some trickery before cutting in and driving the ball into the bottom left corner.

Inside the 70th minute Gateshead pulled level via Frankie Nouble who scored only his second goal for the Tynesiders, after he latched onto a brilliant through ball from Harry Chapman, the striker slotted past Lavercombe to make it two-all.

In the six minutes of added-time all three points were in the hands of Jephcott for the Tinners when he went one-on-one with the goalkeeper after a magnificent touch over Bakare’s head, yet somehow the striker’s bending effort went just past the top corner, and into the stands.

Gateshead now look towards their next fixture, where they face AFC Wimbeldom away in the first round of the 2025-2026 FA Cup. The Wombles currently sit fifth place in League One.
