Bedlington 1-3 Willington Quay Saints: Saints come from behind to go top

Willington Quay Saints recovered from a goal down to earn a much-deserved 3-1 victory at Bedlington to return to the top of the Reeves Independent First Division.

The hosts lead early from a fortunate tap-in, before headers from Ian Fada and Tony Lucas turned the game around either side of halftime.

Robbie Shaw then wrapped up the scoring midway through the second half by tapping into an empty net, as the Saints now make it four league games unbeaten on the bounce.

After last weekend’s poor display against Newcastle University, Mark Henderson’s side looked to make amends in the league, but got off to the worst possible start.

Just three minutes in, a good move on the edge of the box saw Ethan Dodgson need to make a great low save from an angle, but his parry wasn’t cleared, leaving the hosts with a tap-in.

However, that goal clicked the Saints into gear and they found their equaliser on 24 minutes, as Robbie Shaw’s high cross was met by Fada, who headed over the Bedlington goalkeeper and into the far corner.

Pressure began building as both Shaw and Jeremy Amakie missed guilt-edged chances, but the goal came 10 minutes into the second half.

Shaw floated in a free-kick to the back post, where Lucas was there to head back across goal for the lead.

Shaw then got his goal, rounding the goalkeeper after being played through by Amakie for his 50th goal for the club to seal a brilliant victory.
