Sunderland takeaway renamed ahead of cup final

Fast food franchise Papa Johns has changed the name of its Sunderland branch, ahead of The Black Cats appearance in the final of the Papa John’s Trophy against Tranmere Rovers this weekend.

The pizza shop, on Newcastle Road in Monkwearmouth, is now called ‘Papa Lee’s’ in honour of Sunderland AFC manager Lee Johnson, who will lead his team out at Wembley Stadium this Sunday (March 14).

Tranmere Rovers manager Keith Hill has also received the same treatment near Rover’s home ground Prenton Park, with the takeaway there being branded ‘Papa Keith’s’ ahead of the final.

Papa Johns’ marketing director Giles Codd said: “We can’t wait for the action at Wembley this weekend, and we know that the teams are going to be desperate to get their name on the trophy.”

The trophy’s sponsor has also announced that it will donate £250,000 to football communities as a part of their ‘Together We Can’ fund. The money will be used to provide new goal posts, football kits, better facilities for people serving refreshments and training for match officials at grassroots level.

“The global pandemic has had a devastating effect on grassroots football, and the coming months are crucial when it comes to ensuring its future.” said Mr Codd.
