Team Sunderland Elite Athlete Simon Jakab was left “devastated” after his team, Consett AFC, were defeated by Hebburn Town on Monday in the FA Vase Final at Wembley.

Jakab, who joined Consett in 2019, was part of the squad that made the delayed final that had been due to take place in September 2020.

After a thrilling first half, which saw Consett twice take the lead only to be pegged back almost immediately by their North East counterparts, it was Hebburn that lifted the cup after a 82nd minute winner from substitute Olly Martin.

Jakab was an unused substitute but enjoyed the experience of playing at the home of football.

He said: “I am devastated for the team, we have worked hard and waited for so long to get here. It was such an experience, one I will never forget, especially at a young age for me. I hope we made the town and the North East proud.”

The Sports Coaching student was an integral part of the university first team that won the Northern Conference Plate as well as the Northern Tier 5B title last season.

Team Sunderland Sport Development Officer Laura Hockaday said: “We’re so proud to see one of our Elite Athletes be a part of a cup final at Wembley, hopefully it won’t be Simon’s last trip there.”
