Team Sunderland Table Tennis Womens 1sts make BUCS debut
Team Sunderland Table Tennis Womens 1sts made their first appearance in the BUCS championships this weekend playing round one of four in the round robin for Northern Tier 2b.
The team unfortunately was missing a second player as recruitment has not been the easiest for such an unusual sport. So, they were left with one player, Silke Heinen, who braved the competition by being put up against Sheffield Hallam Women 1sts and University of Sheffield Women 1sts.
With already being 3-0 against both teams it would be impossible to win. Coming up against Sheffield Hallam Women 1sts, the first match was against Sheffield Hallam’s Emma where Heinen walked away with a 3-0 win with scores in the sets being 11-2, 11-5, 11-4. Next up was Emma’s teammate, Susmitha. Heinen was again victorious and walked away with yet another 3-0 victory with the scores being just as close as the last match, 11-2, 11-5, 11-3. Both skillful players and a pleasure to play against, they walk away with the win 3-2.
Heinen was set to play the University of Sheffield next, but Sheffield Women were absent at the time of play so with that the win for this round goes to the Sunderland Women team. They will get another chance to play each other again in future rounds which Sunderland women are looking forward to.
Next round of the BUCS round robin Table Tennis fixture will be in Newcastle University on the December, 2 where Sunderland Women will be set to play York women’s 1 and Durham women’s 3.
