Michael van Gerwen gets Premier League glory in Newcastle as Luke Littler booed on Tyneside

Utilita Arena hosted a captivating night of darts as Michael van Gerwen was again victorious in the PDC Premier League beating Nathan Aspinall in the final.

The Flying Dutchman overcame Gerwyn Price and Luke Littler on his way to a third straight Premier League final.

A bumper Tyneside crowd made their feelings known to the teenage sensation Littler. The Manchester United fan emerged to boos from the arena.

Littler won his quarter-final in dramatic fashion after taking Peter Wright to a deciding final leg. Both averaged a score of over 103 across the game.

Two champions of the world fell at the quarter-final stage on the night. Former world champion Michael Smith lost to Nathan Aspinall before reigning world champion Luke Humphries lost his quarter final match against Rob Cross.

The only game that did not go the distance saw Michael van Gerwen put Gerwyn Price out of action for the night with a stunning 6-4 win.

Aspinall, who had not won yet in the Premier League this year, found himself in the final after winning his semi-final against Rob Cross setting up a final against van Gerwen who won his semi-final against Littler in spectacular fashion, taking out 90 all inside the 18 segment.

The final played out in MVG’s favour from the offset as he pulled to a healthy 5-2 lead, surviving a scare from the Asp as he brought it back to 5-4 with a stunning 170 checkout. Amid a noisy crowd who were on Aspinall’s side all night, serenading him with the Killers’ Mr Brightside early in the final, he fought back bravely against van Gerwen.

But it wasn’t to be as MVG won 6-4, taking out D8 to seal the win with a customary “BOOM!”

Mighty Mike extends his lead at the top of the league table to eight points and has now won three quarters of the league nights.

The Premier League moves on to Night Five in Exeter on February 29.
