Guisborough Town hand Andrew Ferguson his first defeat in charge of Newcastle Benfield
Guisborough Town 3-0 Newcastle Benfield
Newcastle Benfield’s four-game unbeaten run came to an end after a poor performance against The Priorymen.
Jason Blackburn put the home side 1-0 up in the 15th minute arriving late at the back post. In the 40th minute, Daniel McWilliams extended Guisborough’s lead with a great cross that ended up in the Benfield goal. Just after halftime in the 48th minute, Joseph Pickett sealed the win for Guisborough by slotting one home.
Benfield were looking to continue their unbeaten run under new manager Andrew Ferguson, while Guisborough looked to get back to winning ways after going two games without a win.
The hosts started the better of the two teams, having early chances by getting the ball wide into areas and then looking to cross into Blackburn. In the 15th minute they did just that, the ball was crossed in from the right-hand side by Pickett which was then flicked on by Kurtis Howes at the near post and then arriving late and unmarked was Blackburn who rolled it in with his stomach.
Benfield started to play better after the goal but only conjured up a couple of chances and failed to convert any.
With five minutes remaining in the half, Daniel McWilliams extended Guisborough’s lead with a cross from the left-hand side of the pitch that looped over Thomas Shanley who was back peddling trying to get back in goal not expecting the cross to fly into the right-hand side of his net. A freak goal which saw Benfield faced with a mountain to climb.
Just after half time the game was put to bed. Pickett sealed all three points by spinning on the half turn with space and time before slotting his effort past Shanley into the left-hand side of the goal to end The Priorymen’s winless run.
The timing of Guisborough’s goals killed any chance of Benfield trying to get any sort of momentum in the game to give themselves any hope of getting back into it. This result means The Lions fall one place down into 16th.
Ferguson and his side will look to get back to winning ways next weekend when they face Crook Town at home.
