Newcastle United Women tasted defeat for the just the second time in the league this season after a 2-0 loss to ten-player Bristol City Women at Ashton Gate on Sunday. 

Bristol City’s Mari Ward put the home side ahead in first-half stoppage time, before Lexi Lloyd-Smith doubled the lead in the 47th minute.

The Robins held on for three points and an impressive clean sheet despite defender Sille Struck getting sent off in the 81st minute after receiving two yellow cards.

Becky Langley’s Newcastle side came into Sunday’s clash unbeaten in three and coming off a 2-0 victory over top of the league Birmingham.

The Magpies started off strong, with an opportunity coming after just seven minutes, but Lois Joel’s shot went just wide.

Newcastle won a free kick in the 27th minute and Beth Lumsden tried her luck, but the ball went just wide of the post. There were three minutes of stoppage time added, and in the second minute Bristol City put themselves ahead through Ward who fired her shot into the roof of the net.

The visitors made a double substitution at half-time bringing on Amber Keegan-Stobbs and Isabella Sibley, but this was not enough to stop the home side from doubling their lead in the 47th minute through Lloyd-Smith.

Bristol City’s Struck was sent off after being shown two yellow cards in just three minutes, giving the Magpies a huge opportunity to get back into the game, even with just ten minutes left to play.

United tried their hardest to pull one back, but it was not to be with all of their efforts being very well defended.

Newcastle United Women will look to bounce back at home to Southampton this coming Sunday, whereas Bristol City Women will travel to sixth place Charlton in their next outing.
