Jay Bates’ managerial reign ends with silverware, thanks to Mauro Asikagou’s save in sudden-death penalties, beating Heaton Stannington in the Northumberland Senior Cup Final.
Nathan Nkunku levelled for Bay, cancelling out Alexander Payne’s opener as the game finished 1-1, with Askiagou saving Joe Robson’s penalty to win the cup.
An end-to-end first half that actually started inside the first minute as Alife Sharp tried to sneak one in with his left foot, but it was an easy catch for Lewis Brass.
The Seahorses set the tempo for this match by putting the Heaton defence under pressure, but as good as their opening start was, they had matters to worry about on their end as Heaton’s Conner Walker nearly bent one in with his effort going just wide.
A few half-chances for either side as the half went on, but it was in the latter stages that it really picked up. Heaton had a free kick inside 35 minutes as Leighton Hopper had his efforts saved by Askiagou, and three minutes later, at the opposite end, Brass had work to do surviving a flurry of chances from Bay.
The Goalkeepers at both ends were kept busy, as with a minute to go until half-time, Walker nearly fired an effort into the net as he forced Asikagou into a save.
After half-time, Heaton broke the deadlock within 50 minutes. A poor clearance from Asikaogu left the ball in play for Payne to evade a line of Bay defenders and find the bottom-left corner, and it seemed the holders were in firm control of the final.
But five minutes later, the Seahorses equalised as Nkunku buried it in the near post, and it was game on again.
Both sides had plenty of chances to take the lead within the half, but neither could find the back of the net with Brass and Askiagou making pivotal saves, as the game finished 1-1, meaning it went to penalties.
The shootout reached sudden death, and Whitley Bay took the lead as Michael Scott scored from the spot. It was 6-5 on penalties, and Heaton needed to score to send it back to the Seahorses.
Robson missed from the spot and was saved by Askiagou. The defender’s shot barely lifted off the ground, conceding the Senior Cup to the Bay, meaning Bates’ managerial journey with the club ends on a cup high.
