Match Report: Four second-half goals as Sunderland u21’s dominate in Premier League Cup

Sunderland U21 vs Bromley U 21

Jake Waters lead the charge at Eppleton Colliery as Sunderland came out victorious in a top of the table Premier League Cup fixture.

Second-half goals for Harrison Jones and Timur Tutierov were followed by a brace from Waters to cap off an excellent display.

After a run of five games unbeaten in all competitions, Sunderland faced Bromley who were the last team to beat Sunderland back in early September in the Premier League Cup Group stages. Sunderland, prior to the game, found themselves top of Group H, level on points with Bromley, off the back of two wins in the competition.

Graeme Murty brought in first team fringe players, Leo Hjelde and Dennis Cirkin into the starting line-up.

Two minutes in Sunderland almost found themselves behind. Samuel Hards dispossessed Jones on the edge before forcing Benjamin Metcalf into a great save as he pushed the ball onto the post.

Sunderland managed to get a grip of the game from then on and five minutes later Ben Middlemas’ volley from close range was struck narrowly over the frame of the goal

Bromley’s Dawid Przybylo soon found himself in space after a poor clearance from Sunderland, his strike struck the post.

On the half hour mark, Bromley nearly capitalised on another mistake after a poor pass out from a goal kick found Jedd Hobbs, whose turned into the box and fire over the bar.

The start of the second half saw Sunderland take the lead. The ball pinged around the box before falling to Waters who forced Dillon Addai to palm his effort into the path of Tutierov who easily dispatched.

Sunderland’s lead was doubled after a goal from Harrison Jones. A clever ball from Middlemas played Jones through, his initial shot was saved by the keeper but he was able to finish on the second attempt.

Waters extended Sunderland’s lead to three at the hour mark, Addai was down quickly to save the first effort before it fell nicely again to Waters who passed it into the net.

Shortly after the hour mark, Bromley lost their manager after a foul call against them lead to an exchange with the referee who had no hesitation.

In the final minutes of the game Waters wrapped up the game after Cirkin squared the ball from the by-line and found Waters who he turned and struck past Addai.

The Result for Sunderland extends their advantage in group H, with them now three points clear of Bromley.

Cirkin played 90 minutes and Hjelde played 60 as they regain match fitness.

Sunderland U21s next play Manchester City U21s in the Premier League 2 at 12:00 on Saturday 6th December.
