Middlesbrough 1-1 Bristol City: Robins score last-gasp leveller at Riverside
Boro squandered a valuable three points in the EFL Championship, due to a late leveller for Bristol City at the Riverside.
Leo Castledine opened the scoring for Boro, but Adam Randell’s last-minute equaliser made sure the points were shared at the Riverside.
Kim Hellberg’s side headed into Saturday’s game following Wednesday’s home defeat to Charlton, which saw the gap behind them close to one point.
But, Boro began the game strongly and almost took the lead.
Hayden Hackney’s looping ball into the box found the head of Tommy Conway at the back post, but he was unable to steer the header under the bar.
With ten minutes into the second half, Boro should have taken the lead, when Aiden Morris’ long-range strike was spilled by Vitek straight to the feet of Alan Browne, whose shot was kept out by the legs of Vitek.
Browne again had the chance to open the scoring, when Targett’s ball into the box found the midfielder unmarked, but his header was straight at the keeper.
Boro’s pressure finally paid off and they took the lead with 65 minutes on the clock through substitute Castledine.
David Strelec’s through ball found Hackney in space on the right hand side, and his cut-back found the substitute unmarked inside the box and he rifled it in off the crossbar.
Strelec had a huge chance to seal the win, when his strike after being freed one-on-one was saved by Vitek.
As the game neared the 90th minute, the visitors started to cause problems, when a whipped free-kick was narrowly wide of Sol Brynn’s goal.
But with less than a minute to play, Bristol City corner earned them a point.
Randell’s bullet header flew past Brynn and into the roof of the net to inflict a sucker punch on Boro’s automatic promotion hopes.
Boro’s next match is away to Blackburn Rovers on Saturday 21st March at 12:30.
