Hebburn Town ended the group stages of the Northern League Cup with a 100% record, conceding just one goal after a 5-0 win over Durham City last night.

First half goals from Thomas Cole and Ben Dibb-Fuller ensured the Hornets were 2-0 up at the break, and in the second half there were goals scored by debutant Daniel Wright and midfielders Carl Taylor and Lewis Suddick.

Hebburn manager Kevin Bolam made a number of changes from the side that beat West Auckland Town on Saturday, naming a young side with four players making their full debuts and two coming off the bench for the first time.

After a slow start to the game, the visitors had the first chance of the game in the 19th minute when Cole’s volley on the end of Dylan Rutherford’s cross hit the crossbar on its way over.

The Hornets took the lead two minutes later when Cole volleyed home in the bottom-right corner on the end of Taylor’s cross.

Durham very nearly equalised in the 38th minute when Brandon Morrison’s one-on-one effort was kept out by ‘keeper Andrew Jennison.

Hebburn doubled their lead three minutes later when Dibb-Fuller’s long range strike took a deflection on its way in and beat the ‘keeper to the right.

15 minutes into the second half, Wright scored his first goal for the visitors burying the ball in the bottom-left corner on the end of Suddick’s through ball.

The Hornets were awarded a penalty in the 69th minute when Cole was brought down in the box by Woodhouse, and Taylor stepped up and struck the ball into the bottom-right corner.

Hebburn nearly made it 5-0 three minutes later but Suddick’s effort brought an impressive close-range save from ‘keeper David Smallman.

Durham were very unlucky not to score in the 84th minute when Anthony Chapman hit the bar, and shortly afterwards the visitors made it five when Suddick put the ball away on the end of Jack Robson’s cross from the left.

Up next for Hebburn is Sunderland RCA at home on Saturday.
