Callum Wilson’s chances for the Euros
Callum Wilson recently returned to the Newcastle starting XI and England manager Gareth Southgate being at the Burnley Newcastle game yesterday.
England manager Gareth Southgate would have been alert to the news that an extra three players have been allowed to be called for national team squads with the previous number of players allowed being 23 now it is 26.
In theory that would potentially allow Southgate to take an extra striker with Harry Kane and Ollie Watkins seemingly sure to be picked.
We will look to see if Newcastle’s no.9 has a shot of being a late addition into the squad that England will take to Germany in June for the Euros and who Wilson is up against for that last striker spot.
Dominic Solanke:
36 games
18 goals
3 assists
Solanke has hit a career best campaign hitting 18 goals thus far with two games remaining certain fans would think that Solanke might have just done enough to get an England call up, but Southgate has previously preferred players that he trusts more than the ones that are arguably in better form.
Ivan Toney:
15 games
4 goals
1 assist
Toney did not play until January due to a betting ban and initially started his return strongly, scoring four goals in his first five games. Since then, however he has fired blank in his last 10 league games and with the squad announcement soon coming Toney will want to get his goalscoring touch back in these remaining games. What may bode well for Toney is that in the most recent international break Toney was picked and scored in the friendly against Belgium.
Callum Wilson:
19 games
9 goals
1 assist
Now Wilson has had massive injury issues all season, but his goal return is still relatively strong scoring twice in as many games. What gives Wilson a potential edge over the other two is that Southgate has trusted Wilson before most notably in the most recent tournament the Qatar World Cup in 2022 where Wilson also scored against Iran in a 6-2 win.
Wilson has a massive opportunity to make a last-minute impression for Southgate’s squad if he continues his good form in the remaining fixtures who’s to say Southgate does not put his trust in Wilson just like he did in 2022.
